Perth’s New Runway

Perth Airport has begun construction of a new runway approximately 2 km east of, and parallel to, the existing main runway. This critical project will increase airport capacity and improve operational efficiency for airlines operating at Perth Airport.

The runway will be 3,000 m long and 45 m wide, supported by new taxiways, lighting, navigational aids, drainage, and other ground infrastructure.

Construction commenced in March 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2028.

Australian Government approvals

In 2018, Perth Airport completed extensive engagement and consultation with the community, industry, and government as part of the Major Development Plan process.

Appropriate environmental offsets have been secured for the project.

The approved Major Development Plan, Offset Strategy and Offset Management Plans can be viewed here.

Detailed infrastructure design

Perth Airport has completed detailed design of the runway infrastructure, with a focus on minimising impacts to the environment and heritage. Perth Airport is committed to ensuring the Munday Swamp heritage site within the project area remains protected and accessible for current and future generations of Whadjuk Noongar people.

Final flight path design

A new runway means new flight paths. Indicative flight path corridors were included in the Major Development Plan, approved in 2020. Based on these corridors, Airservices Australia—supported by Perth Airport—has begun the detailed design process for the new flight paths.

Airservices has now commenced the initial consultation stage for this process.

Activities

Runway 24 Instrument Landing System (ILS) outage

Due to construction works associated with the new runway, the Instrument Landing System (a ground-based navigation aid) for the existing Runway 24 will be out of service from 18 March 2026 until late 2027/early 2028. Runway 24 is the north-east end of the cross runway, near Hazelmere.

This will have no impact on current flight paths in use at the airport.

Commencement of construction activities

Major construction activities are now underway on the new runway site, including building demolition and early enabling works.

As work progresses, traffic conditions around the airport may change to facilitate works safely.

The construction phase will also lead to an increase in heavy vehicle movements, particularly on the eastern side of the airport estate via Abernethy Road. We thank you for your cooperation as this critical infrastructure is delivered.

Construction

In December 2025, Perth Airport appointed Skyway (a joint venture between BMD Constructions and CPB Contractors) to deliver a major component of the new runway project.
